Diane, saw you first in 1999 in Calgary Alberta. Was so relieved to find that I wasn't the only b mom out there. Since then, I've emersed myself in learning as much as I can in all aspects of FASD. With 17 years of experience, I now feel confident in helping other parents, caregivers in their journeys with their children. Thanks for continuing with this issue that is so important for today's and future generations.

I am the mother of three adopted children who have been diagnosed with FAS and or FAE. I am looking for any information to help them. I too have felt there has been a missing link with my older child. He has been diagnosed with so many disorders and has been on so many different medications. Sometimes they seam to work and then they don't. I have adopted Nancy Thomas' parenting techniques which has helped tremendously. Thank you for your time. Brenda Kaufman

Thank you for this site, for now I can better understand the complexities of my friend's behavior. I am often bewildered as to why he puts jelly in the cupboard, and various strange things in the fridge. I am grateful to have known two special sibling girls, Ashley and Tiffany, before him; with FAS and FAE (respectively); to remind me the love and affection is more important than the bewildering things. I love Jacob's sense of humor, his playfulness, his love for the Lord; and his heart for trying to do the right thing, even when he doesn't know what is right. I love that he cares to try, which is more than I can say for a lot of "normies." I frequently don't know what to do with Jacob, but I leave it up to God to give me good sense and presiding love in dealing with Jacob, and patience is never more a virtue than in situations such as this. Thank you, Ashley and Tiffany for teaching me how frustrating it is to have FAS/FAE, so that I can remember to respond to Jacob and others, in love; as they now need to do for me, since I have been diagnosed with acquired brain damage.

I have been searching through basic FASD information to find material to send to family members, who haven't a clue what we have been going through with our 18 year old adopted son. They hear the horror stories, and send well-meaning poems and other writings, all of which tell me that they need to be educated. Our son has static encephalopathy, hyperactivity, learning difficulties, and bipolar disorder. If he can get through high school (alternative school setting), we will breath a sigh of relief. He has a court appointed guardian, is working with the state Vocational Rehabilitation program, and we have applied for SSI and developmental disabilities assistance. He wants to be independent, and we try to let him be so, but it usually turns into a disaster. How does one explain all of this to bystanders, who often think the youngster only needs more discipline. We are exausted. Thank you for your website and the information you make available to the rest of the world.

I am a Child and youth care worker in the Vancouver School Board working in a gr.8-9 classroom specifically set up for adolescents withFAS/E. (the second year of a pilot project) I have a two year diploma in CYC and am in the process of attaining a undergraduate degree in CYC from the Univ. of Victoria, B.C. I found a draft of Diane's article A Poor Fit: ......for Iceberg,April 1977 which has turned on a huge light for me in regards to working with my kids in the class. Thank you so much Diane for a wonderful article. The need for a real paradigm shift in the way we look at the needs of our clients is definitely something I face every day. I often saw how interventions based on learning theory did not work for these kids ( reading Alfie Kohn's book Punished by Rewards convinced me further of the dubious effects of this approach) but when you state the likelihood of causing further dameage by using this approach I realized the need for other intervention ways. We have in the class a student who I feel is now hitting a real wall (along with his caregivers and other supports) due to the secondary symptoms you speak of in the article. These secondary symptoms and problems asociated with his primary diagnosis are reaching critical levels and I am wondering about what a possible next step could be. I have passed on your article to members of his care team and will follow up by inviting myself to the next meeting. But it would be good if I could ask you for your input into my thinking that I should advocate a move for this student to a place called the Maples in Burnaby, BC which is a mental health care facility for teens that uses interventions based on attachment theory. I know the details are sketchy in what I can give you about this case but does this seem like a reasonable avenue to consider ?. I know there is options there for educating the client's supports to the attachment theory approach which I thought may provide an opportunity for facilitating an approach that looks at changing the environment rather than the presenting behaviours. I really would appreciate some feedback on this case if it is not too sketchy to warrant a reply. I am also interested in any articles that you could point me towards that would be helpful in my considerations of this case. I have put my self on your guest list in the hopes that I would be informed about possible workshops, lectures, or presentations that you would be giving in the Greater Vancouver area and hope I have a chance to meet you in person some time in the future. Thank you so much for your work so far and for considering my case if you have the time Take care, Most Respectfully yours Don Straathof

Hello Diane and thank you so much for your paper that I recieved through the grapevine "Caring and Coping" which you presented at Univ. of Victoria BC, Canada on Feb.18-19,2000. I am presenting a mini workshop at my workplace on FAS/e as part of my course work for my degree in Child and Youth Care from U.Vic.which will contain references to your work. While doing research for may paper and presentation I came across info. on Attachment Theory approaches to dealing with teens with behavioural problems. To me this seems to be an appropriate intervention "fit" for the FAS/E kids I work with. Could you give me some feedback on this idea? Any other options you could reccommend I look into in my search for success for my teens with FAS/E?

Good Morning Diane: We met when I was house sitting Keith's floating home last summer. My last project took me out of town every week. However, my new project will keep me local. We had spoken about the possibility of me assisting your program with my marketing experience. If you are still interested, please contact me. As I had mentioned when we met, my 33 year old adopted son is affected by FAS. He continues to be a challenge to himself, our family and his wife and children. What resources can you recommend to us for approaching this situation now that he is no longer a child but continues to stretch our patience? Also, are there any support groups for parents and spouses of FAS adults? You can contact me either by e-mail or 503.351.2477. I am looking forward to assisting FASCETS in any way possible. I heard about this site from a friend who discovered it in trying to get help in dealing with her children. I wish that I had had more information like this as I was dealing with my son through his developing years. Now he is 18, and though I'm still working to help him to be a successful independent adult, I've missed a lot of ground. So many counselors, teachers, doctors, and even psychiatrists will diagnose ADD/ADHD and medicate for that, but they don't do or say much in regards to fetal alcohol and drug problems. This is wonderful.
