My husband and I are adopting a 14 yr. old with psychosocial dwarfism, FAS, MR, muscular eye problems, ODD, ADHD, and reactive attachment d/o. Yes, we know what we're getting into...sort of...I'm a spec. ed. teacher and my husband grew up in 'the system' so we're pretty open-eyed about the whole thing. My questions involve Robert's mental and physical functioning. He's been tested at a 55-60 IQ. Personally, and professionally, I feel that he's functioning much higher than that. Do you have any recommendations for a completely oral IQ test since he is virtually a non-reader? He's been in placement since he was 2, and has had little/no formal education. I want to get him into a vocational program and OT, and whatever other services Pennsylvania provides. Any help, advice and support will be greatly appreciated. I'm the Mother of an adoptive daughter with FAE. I was told this by a Dr. Chadsnoft after having her tested in Chicago. She was then 8 and is now 14 years old. I'm not handling the situation as well and I believe and hope I can. I'm searching for information and support in my area of Illinios. I would love to know how to ground mail you. I am looking at having an 11 month old child assessed(believe child is fetal alcohol). This child resides in Reedsports and is one of three children born to a substance abusing parent. He appears to have some facial features which cause myself and the adoptive parents concern. The family just want to make sure they know everything about this child, so they can get the services they need. I did DayCare for 13 years. And not one time did i ever recieve any training for working with these kids. When I sold my business I went to work for a woman whom had adopted her grandson and had been Diagnosed with FAE. I was shocked to find out that I could look in the past and almost hand pick the kids that I believe were effected by eitehr FAE or full blown Syndrom, or inbetween. The more training that we have out here the better off the kids will be that are evvected and the better off the unborn babies of tomorrow will be.

We have a five year old son whom we adopted as aninfant. Prenatally he was exposed to meth, marijuana and alcohol. ESD has evaluated him asbeing in the normal range in all areas. However,we do need help with oppositional behavior andanger management. Is a medical diagnosis importantand where do we go for an evaluation to determineif, in fact, there is definite FAE or ARND? My 12 year old stepson, Derek, has been diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. Derek's birth mother is Bi-polar and we have wondered due to Derek's behavior problems if he was going to be bi-polar also. His mother seemed to change during her pregnancy with Derek. She didn't seem to want to be pregnant and became depressed and despondant. She began drinking and neglecting her prenatal care. Shortly after Derek's birth, she was diagnosed as being bi-polar, a condition that the doctor's believed was triggered by hormonal changes during her pregnancy. My husband tried to get help for her, but she insisted that she didn't have a problem. Four years ago, he became a single father to their 2 children. We have been married for 2 1/2 years now, and Derek has been the challenge of my life. I have a friend and co-worker who is majoring in Psychology. I told her about the problems that we are having with Derek, and she said it sounded alot to her like FAS. Although I knew of Derek's past, I didn't connect his behavior to the possibility of FAS, I just went along with the diagnosis of the countless doctors and social workers that we've taken him to. Despite medications of Ritalin and Risprodal, we saw little change in his behavior. The symptons that I found described on your website for FAS are exactly the problems that we have with Derek. I suspect my 51/2 yr. old granddaughter has FAE. After frustrating visits etc....I became aware "something is terribly wrong."I have been accused of not being able to handle her etccc(Iam the mother of 9)So much blame has been going on---I nearly wept when I read all your info and printing it out.The story of Susie really hit home.Now I can confront my daughter with facts---hopefully she will see L.s behavior lin a different light.Do research and above all recileve medical help.L. is adopted,K.& husband have recently separated--now my daughter must go it alone.She is highly intellegent,high power job etc....& so stressed out.I feel the whole family need to stop accusing ----and focus on L. I have a 9 year old birth daughter, and a 7.5 year old adopted daughter, whom we have had for almost 1 year. She has no diagnosis of FAS, but I feel sure she has some of the effects. This is the first time I have heard of ARND, and I would say that this describes her quite well. While she is "high functioning", she definitely has many of the characteristics, and all of the compensating traits, that is not the term you used, but I can't remember it right now. She was removed from her birth mother's care due to alcoholism and cocaine use. I am sure that her mother must have drunk during pregnancy. Thanks for a great site!

Thanks for providing this website with useful information. It's been a struggle these past 4 years trying to pull information together from professionals to try to help my 4 Russian adopted children. Not one professional, after 4 years of testing and tutoring mentioned FAE, until I presented the most recent Doctor with my research.Many professionals are not educated in FAE. I came to FAS through personal experience with a foster son and realized what I had been dealing with when I attended Barb Wybrecht's first FAS Conference in Michigan with Diane Malbin. HI there, I am a Social Work major at the University of Portland and just recently completed a paper on FAS and will be presenting it to my class tomorrow. Your website is a wealth of information, I just wish I had had access to it sooner. Just an FYI...during my research I discovered that alcohol is the substance that teenagers abuse the most and are usually unaware of the consequences of mixing alcohol and sex. I was at Planned Parenthood today looking at their brochures and they did NOT have any about the Prenatal exposure to alcohol. I was just wondering if you were aware of this. I am hoping to volunteer at Planned Parenthood and would like to bring this to their attention. Any suggestions?

Love your website. My husband and myself have custody of my nephew, since birth. He has Fetal Alchol Syndrome. Many milestones and hurdles in our life. We have found one organization to be very helpful in therapy. The A.N.D. program based out of Toronto. They are the Association for Neurogically Disabled. They travel all over Canada and a Team from the States travels also. Setting up clinics and workshops. Anyone wanting information can e-mail me.
