| I am trying to learn more about FAS. I seem to exhibit FAS behavioral characteristics, trouble with relationships. My mother was an alcoholic. Perhaps she drank while I was developing. (She has been dead 10 years) Perhaps that is the reason for some of my (perceived?) problems. Are you aware of Canadian FAS serices? |

| I have a 19 year old step-daughter who has been diagnosed with Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder. In the past 4 years I have worked with her intensively to increase her academic skills. She has successfully learned to read pretty well, and can now write simple sentences. She has graduated from High School and will begin a class soon to be trained as a nursing assistant. I am looking for ways to help her become more confident and comfortable with different activities. Everything is so hard for her. Simple tasks seem impossible and she is so awkward. I have been working with her in a swimming pool so see if she can relax her muscles while she learns tasks. We are having some success. Do you know anything about that? |

| This is all new to me, I have legal custody of a (7)yr. boy, that has severe behavioral problems, now after (5)yrs with him in my home, fighting a constant battle I now find that he may have FAS..This is not something that can be discussed with friends, nor family because no one seems to be able to relate(it always comes to give him up).How does one force the school systems to help, force the insurance companies to provide the testings, and force the county(Children's Services) to acknowledge that this child has needs that my insurance and my resources will not provide for alone. I pray that one person reads this and will be able to guide me in the right direction. |

| this week my 10 year old son was diognosed as having fas. the diognosis was not a suprise to me and i was prepared and ready to accept the news when i recieved it. i thank the people who have created and maintained this sight which i discovered while doing research for various courses i was taking to earn the required credentials to become a chemical dependency counselor in MN. what i am not prepared for is a wy to explain the diognosis to my son while doing no harm. can someone help me with that? i have also discovered that in this town of nearly 100,000 there are no counselors devoted to caring for the individuals who have ARND's or their families. is there a list of qualified caregivers who can help us? i am also wondering what i can do to become one of those qualified people. if anyone can assist me with any of these questions i would surely appreciate it. thank you dearly.....jay orth |

He excels in sports but at times is very awkward. He has a definite anger management problem. He went through a period of scratching his arms (self mutilation). | I am interested in finding out the effects to teen agers when the mother drinks during pregnancy. I am the step mom to six children, two of them (the youngest) have problems more than the average teen....their mom is an alcoholic, and won't admit it. She was in treatment after all her childbearing but still drinks and is in denial.....she is VERY mean to the kids, but, that's not the basis of my writing. WE have one child (17) male, living with us, and another 19 year female, that we have a lot of connection with. Both have memory problems, unable to focus on their studies....unable to understand their own behaviors, unable to function in a 8-5 world, and the girl constantly runs away....without thinking it might be a good idea to let us know what her thoughts are. SHe is in counseling, has been raped twice, and never gets to the nitty gritty of her problems with counseling.....she can't seem to go there admitting the alcoholic tendencies.....in her family. Gads, she can't hold a job, makes promises and just keeps screwing up. WE are wondering if this is all due to the fact that FAS/FAE may have something to do with it....they need to be dianosed before then can be helped, but, they just won't admit it....do we just let them go on, or, where do we go? | I have a 13 yr. old w/ FAE. I am currently home schooling her mostly due to her inablility to make proper choices at school. (She is easily pulled and talked into doing 'anything' rather than be made fun of and not fit in.) She has also preliminary sexual encounters that she sees nothing wrong with. Is there any way to teach them about this stuff and impress on them that they need to be strong enough to make up there own mind? |

| I wasborn in 1940 and diagnosed with FAS when I was 48 years old. It was a frustratating time for me as my mother had an IQ of 147, but abused alcohol and drugs since she was 19 years old. I knew there was something wrong with me, but never had a name for it. Now I know what is wrong and don't feel quilty or ' lazy' anymore. I do the best I can whenever I can. and am not afraid of hard work. i enjoy the challenges that life gives me in the face of my disability and have persevered. thank you for being here to explain more of what I have not wished to know until now. |

| There was recently a FAS Roundtable in the region that I live in and the results of this roundtable were circulated among agencies in our region. The paper that was circulated outlined the "key beliefs" identified by professionals and social workers during that discussion. I would like to share some of them here and would appreciate feed back from any of you. Please keep in mind that these "key beliefs" are NOT mine. Here are some of the statements made....1. FAS people do not know what is in there best interest. 2. As we work with FAS adolescents we need to "pick the hill to die on" in respect to the decisions they want to make. I am finding that the general belief in my region is tht FAs children cannot learn, cannot grow, cannot and should not be encouraged to reach their full potential, and that FAS children are all the same and have the same potential and the same abilities. Quite frankly I believe that professionals in my region are doing a great disservice to the children and families dealing with FAS. I look forward to your comments....thank you. |

| I married a man with FAS. For years I was unaware of his actual diagnosis but I knew that his situation was related to alcohol abuse. I believed that I suffered from FAE or simply some inherited form of eye malformations (severe strabismus). I attempted to understand his situation simply because I was teased by students in school for my physical difference. Now, we are both 33. He (my husband) is doing very well in the computer industry with his FAS and he has strategically halted my future. We have two children and he has requested a divorce. Despite his physical difference, this man has become a success story with the help of me, his family, his friends and a possible mistress. Although, there is a serious problem with drinking while pregnant, to much attention has been brought to my husband and his physical difference. It (the attention) may be crippling should life take a change for the worst for him. In the meantime, the kids and I do not know what our future holds. This is just a little light of truth on the topic of FAS from someone who cared. |
