Our recently adopted 9 year old daughter from Russia looks like she may have FAE according to our psychologist. We are having a lot of problems dealing with her behavior. Just recently she dug her eye tooth out of her mouth with a spoon and said it didn't hurt. This has us concerned for her safety as well as the safety of our other two children. Hi, I'm an Australian foster parent of a 17 year old daughter who we believe has FAE - unfortunately this disability is not yet recognised in Australia and we have so far been unable to find someone who is able to make a professional diagnosis. We have felt very alone over the last 16 years trying to deal with challenging behaviour that noone else seems to understand. I am desparate to find any successful methods on teaching math to children with FAS. I have been working with his classroom teacher, his OT, ST, VT, social worker and psychologist for the past three years--most recently at Jamaal's IEP in January to develop and consistant and cohesive approach to this challenge. However, as in the past, I left not feeling very hopeful. Jamaal is a bright, loving, engagingly handsome 9-1/2 year old. He's always trying and I desparately want to help him succeed. He is in a cross-categorical classroom with 17 other special children, 1 teacher and a half-time teacher's aide, so there isn't much time nor other resources to try alternative methods--so his teacher says. Thanks for your pages. After two weeks of stumbling research I made it to your site which offers some hope. I can't count the times I've asked lawyers and judges the question " Don't you think that the day my son was born his mother was drinking screwdrivers has something to do with his actions?". He was born in the Phillippines while I was in the U.S. Navy. Finally at the age of 29 and faceing 10 years in the Texas Dept. of Corrections for probation ( Burglary of a habbitation - he was caught taking the good back) violation (not reporting) he has been diagnosed FAE thanks to a family doctor who is one of those who care. Now my dilemma is finding an alternative that will satisfy the judge at his hearing.Of course the DA's office is the is who recomended the 10 yrs. ANY help appreciated! diane; i am happy to see you are up and running. we dream of inviting you to southeast minnesota sometime to train and speak. could you send the info about what your fees and per diem are.? how many audience members you like etc?? i taught 27 in community ed a few weeks ago[fas/e 101]. the next week over 125 nurses and nursing students in winona area all heard the 2 arc ladies from duluth. their message was one of warning and fear. yours is one of help making a difference, dare we say hope? fas/e should not be feared in the kids already here. by the way-jesse is almost 13yo. can you fathom??? lindalee soderstrom

found your site last night....and it seems quit helpful so far.....tho what i need is a way to do my research on this topic online, as i have no access to a library right now.....in 3 weeks i will legally become the step mother of a 12 yr old with fas.....and i am concerned with him , about him, and for him.....i would like to see his education begin to encompass more than basic colors and numbers since he is 12, and apparently quite bored with them.......i want to be able to do all that is possible to do to help at home this summer, while there is no school....i do not want to see this beautiful young man slip between the cracks of a country school system that does not know what to do with him........in the last 12 years he has lost so much that many of us take for granted.......and i do not want him to keep losing.....i am determined that he will learn to talk......i know that he knows what he wants to say and express......and i believe he knows the words to say it...now all he needs is a way to do it.....a way around his lack of verbal skills ........thank you for giving me hope

Only U.K.(I'm from Liverpool) resource for carers of children with FAS. I am the adoptive mother to Kerry who is nearly ten. Kerry has FAS, precocious puberty(desperate for info)she is being treated with Zoladex depot injections, Kerry also has behavioural problems.When kerry came to us nine and a half years ago no info was available to parents of these kids. Did my own research, now lecture in colleges, to social workers, and medical professionals. I shouldn't have to do this, I should be able to devote all my time to Kerry. But someone has to stand up and shout for our kids. If the professionals who are supposed to support the carers won't do it, we will have to do it ourselves. Oops fell off my high horse again!

I heard Diane speak in Toronto when my son was first diagnosed with FAS in 1993 or 94 when he was in grade one. He has now finished grade 6 (sad to say, unsuccessfully). Diane was a great inspiration to me at the time I heard her speak. Though we have been getting a lot of professional help with our son in the past six years, life is ever difficult, and I continue to seek more and learn more. I just discovered your website, and hopefully, it can lead me to new paths and renewed hope.

I had a niece who I think had FAS or FAE. She was diagnosed as having Cerebial Palsey. I have read things about FAS that lead me to believe she was FAS. Her mother drank quite a bit during her first trimester.
